James Thomson - To Seraphina

James Thomson - To Seraphina

The wanton's charms, however bright, br Are like the false illusive light br Whose flattering unauspicious blaze br To precipices oft betrays: br But that sweet ray your beauties dart, br Which clears the mind, and cleans the heart, br Is like the sacred queen of night, br Who pours a lovely gentle light br Wide o'er the dark, by wanderers blest, br Conducting them to peace and rest. br A vicious love depraves the mind, br 'Tis anguish, guilt, and folly joined; br But Seraphina's eyes dispense br A mild and gracious influence; br Such as in visions angels shed br Around the heaven-illumined head. br To love thee, Seraphina, sure br Is to be tender, happy, pure; br 'Tis from low passions to escape, br And woo bright virtue's fairest shape; br 'Tis ecstasy with wisdom joined; br And heaven infused into the mind.
