Allen Tate - Light

Allen Tate - Light

Last night I fled until I came br To streets where leaking casements dripped br Stale lamplight from the corpse of flame; br A nervous window bled. br br The moon swagged in the air. br Out of the mist a girl tossed br Spittle of song; a hoarse light br Spattered the fog with heavy hair. br br Damp bells in a remote tower br Sharply released the throat of God, br I leaned to the erect night br Dead as stiff turf in winter sod. br br Then with the careless energy br Of a dream, the forward curse br Of a cold particular eye br In the headlong hearse.
