Allen Tate - Pastoral

The enquiring fields, courtesies br And tribulations of the air- br Be still and give them peace: br br The girl in the gold hair br With her young man in clover br In shadow of the day's glare br br And there they were by the river br Where a leafs light interval br Ringed the deep hurrying mirror; br br Yet naught there to befall br Such meditations as beguile br Courage when love grows tall br br For tall he was in green style br Of a willow shaking the pool. br 'Let time be quiet as a mile,' br br He said, 'time is love's fool.' br Yet time he would appease: br 'Time, be easy and cool.' br br The enquiring courtesies br Of first dusk then debated br To cloud their agonies: br br She, her head back, waited br Barbarous the stalking tide; br He, nor balked nor sated br br But plunged into the wide br Area of mental ire, br Lay at her wandering side.
