Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch - Exmoor Verses

I. VASHTI'S SONG br br br Over the rim of the Moor, br And under the starry sky, br Two men came to my door br And rested them thereby. br br Beneath the bough and the star, br In a whispering foreign tongue, br They talked of a land afar br And the merry days so young! br br Beneath the dawn and the bough br I heard them arise and go: br And my heart it is aching now br For the more it will never know. br br Why did they two depart br Before I could understand? br Where lies that land, O my heart? br -O my heart, where lies that land? br br II. SATURN br br br From my farm, from hèr farm br Furtively we came. br In either home a hearth was warm: br We nursed a hungrier flame. br br Our feet were foul with mire, br Our faces blind with mist; br But all the night was naked fire br About us where we kiss'd. br br To her farm, to my farm, br Loathing we returned; br Pale beneath a gallow's arm br The planet Saturn burned. br br III. DERELICTION br br br O'er the tears that we shed, dear br The bitter vines twist, br And the hawk and the red deer br They keep where we kiss'd: br All broken lies the shieling br That sheltered from rain, br With a star to pierce the ceiling, br And the dawn an empty pane. br br Thro' the mist, up the moorway, br Fade hunters and pack; br From the ridge to thy doorway br Happy voices float back… br O, between the threads o' mist, love, br Reach your hands from the house.
