Robert Crawford - God's Rest.

Robert Crawford - God's Rest.

I saw God in a dream go by, br As if He trod the phantom air br Within a hushed eternity, br Dead worlds around Him everywhere. br No sign of life — and God asleep! br All things absorbed in Him at last; br Nothing for Him to care for, keep, br Since thought from everything had passed. br A mystic vision on its way br His image filled the awful gloom, br As if His work were o'er for aye — br Himself His own creation's tomb! br As if, when sleep fell on Him, all br Sensation with a tremor ceased, br As all things felt the weird recall, br And the gigantic strain released. br The worlds stayed still without a breath, br Entranced within the phantom air, br Since God had done with life and death br And ta'en Himself from everywhere. br This was His Sabbath. In the past br 'Tis said He rested for a day; br But this was a sleep that would last, br Since He had done with all for aye.
