Harold Monro - Two Poems: (Numbers i and x in 'Strange Meetings.')

I br If suddenly a clod of earth should rise, br And walk about, and breathe, and speak, and love, br How one would tremble, and in what surprise br Gasp: 'Can you move?' br br I see men walking, and I always feel: br 'Earth! How have you done this? What can you be?' br I can't learn how to know men, or conceal br How strange they are to me. br br II br A flower is looking through the ground, br Blinking at the April weather; br Now a child has seen the flower: br Now they go and play together. br br Now is seems the flower will speak, br And will call the child its brother -- br But, oh strange forgetfulness! -- br They don't recognize each other.
