Lola Ridge - Manhattan

Lola Ridge - Manhattan

Out of the night you burn, Manhattan, br In a vesture of gold - br Span of innumerable arcs, br Flaring and multiplying - br Gold at the uttermost circles fading br Into the tenderest hint of jade, br Or fusing in tremulous twilight blues, br Robing the far-flung offices, br Scintillant-storied, forking flame, br Or soaring to luminous amethyst br Over the steeples aureoled - br br Diaphanous gold, br Veiling the Woolworth, argently br Rising slender and stark br Mellifluous-shrill as a vender's cry, br And towers squatting graven and cold br On the velvet bales of the dark, br And the Singer's appraising br Indolent idol's eye, br And night like a purple cloth unrolled - br br Nebulous gold br Throwing an ephemeral glory about life's vanishing points, br Wherein you burn… br You of unknown voltage br Whirling on your axis… br Scrawling vermillion signatures br Over the night's velvet hoarding… br Insolent, towering spherical br To apices ever shifting.
