Edwin Markham - A Prayer

Edwin Markham - A Prayer

Teach me, Father, how to go br Softly as the grasses grow; br Hush my soul to meet the shock br Of the wild world as a rock; br But my spirit, propt with power, br Make as simple as a flower. br Let the dry heart fill its cup, br Like a poppy looking up; br Let life lightly wear her crown br Like a poppy looking down, br When its heart is filled with dew, br And its life begins anew. br br Teach me, Father, how to be br Kind and patient as a tree. br Joyfully the crickets croon br Under the shady oak at noon; br Beetle, on his mission bent, br Tarries in that cooling tent. br Let me, also, cheer a spot, br Hidden field or garden grot— br Place where passing souls can rest br On the way and be their best.
