Grace Hazard Conkling - To A New-Born Baby Girl

Grace Hazard Conkling - To A New-Born Baby Girl

And did thy sapphire shallop slip br Its moorings suddenly, to dip br br Adown the clear, ethereal sea br From star to star, all silently? br What tenderness of archangels br In silver, thrilling syllables br Pursued thee, or what dulcet hymn br Low-chanted by the cherubim? br And thou departing must have heard br The holy Mary's farewell word, br Who with deep eyes and wistful smile br Remembered Earth a little while. br br Now from the coasts of morning pale br Comes safe to port thy tiny sail. br Now have we seen by early sun, br Thy miracle of life begun. br All breathing and aware thou art, br With beauty templed in thy heart br To let thee recognize the thrill br Of wings along far azure hill, br And hear within the hollow sky br Thy friends the angels rushing by. br These shall recall that thou hast known br Their distant country as thine own, br To spare thee word of vales and streams, br And publish heaven through thy dreams. br The human accents of the breeze br Through swaying star-acquainted trees br Shall seem a voice heard earlier, br Her voice, the adoring sigh of her, br When thou amid rosy cherub-play br Didst hear her call thee, far away, br And dream in very Paradise br The worship of thy mother's eyes.
