Stephen Spender - The Trance

Stephen Spender - The Trance

Sometimes, apart in sleep, by chance, br You fall out of my arms, alone, br Into the chaos of your separate trance. br My eyes gaze through your forehead, through the bone, br And see where in your sleep distress has torn br Its path, which on your lips is shown br And on your hands and in your dream forlorn. br br Restless, you turn to me and press br Those timid words against my ear br Which thunder at my heart like stones. br 'Mercy,' you plead, Then 'Who can bless?' br You ask. 'I am pursued by Time,' you moan. br br I watch that precipice of fear br You tread, naked in naked distress. br To that deep care we are committed br Beneath the wildness of our flesh br And shuddering horror of our dream, br Where unmasked agony is permitted. br br Our bodies, stripped of clothes that seem, br And our souls, stripped of beauty's mesh, br Meet their true selves, their charms outwitted. br This pure trance is the oracle br That speaks no language but the heart br br Our angel with our devil meets br In the atrocious dark nor do they part br But each forgives and greets, br And their mutual terrors heal br Within our married miracle.
