Juan Olivarez - A Baby Mockingbird

Juan Olivarez - A Baby Mockingbird

Sitting in my front yard, br A mockingbird fell from a tree. br And I couldn't see it in my heart, br To just sit there and let him be. br br I picked him up, amid the din, br His parents were raising all around. br With so many cats, it would have been a sin, br To leave him sitting on the ground. br br I tried to put him in his tree, br But he flew down again. br It seems to me he couldn't see, br The danger he was in. br br I took him inside, and put him in, br A little bird cage that I have. br Planning to return him to his kin, br When he was strong enough to leave. br br In the morning I went to see the mockingbird, br Just to make sure that he was fed. br And though no peep all night I heard, br The little mockingbird was dead. br br It broke my heart to see him so, br And now my soul is in a rage. br All I wanted was to see him go, br None of God's creatures should be caged.
