Robert Laurence Binyon - A Dream

Robert Laurence Binyon - A Dream

Behold an endless evening over land br That lapped in vast vales rises up afar br Into the frozen mountains; evening brimmed br With silence, so miraculously clear br That crevices in peaks of distant stone br And rust--red boughs of cedars, at the foot br Of those remote and voiceless waterfalls, br Which down the black steeps of lone gorges plunge, br Are shaped distinct unto the wondering eye; br And the mind, seeing, notes not how 'tis fair, br But throned in languor has already summ'd br All the vain journey thither. Not a sound br Near by; no motion lifts a single leaf, br Nor stirs one cold stalk of the sappy spurge br And powdery hemlock, nor 'mid clustered reeds br The peeping heads of certain dim blue flowers br Mirrored in water idle as themselves.
