Robert Laurence Binyon - When I Am Only I

Robert Laurence Binyon - When I Am Only I

When I am only I, br The secret battle--ground br Of world and will, wherein br Self is so strictly bound, br br Then am I condemned; br Then can I understand br The heart crumbling to dust br And the eyes stopt with sand. br br But when, self fallen asleep, br Quickens through all my veins br The entrancing light, and stream br The rivers and the rains, br br Though to the wondrous earth br The tendril senses cling br And amid living leaves br I, as a bird, sing. br br The breath comes of a world br Beyond all human moan. br There I am lost, and there br I am come into mine own.
