Robert Laurence Binyon - Before Sleep Comes

Robert Laurence Binyon - Before Sleep Comes

Where do you float from, visions that shine ere sleep br Subdues with leaden law br The dancing fires of the brain?--In a shadowy land, br As a king from a tower I saw. br br There came startled gazelles, beautifully leaping, br Delicate--hoofed: they were gone, br And the red pomegranate showered its petalled bloom br On the glittering stream alone. br br I saw the dust on an Indian plain, and a grove br Where pilgrims went in white: br I saw the mountains, throned upon purple air, br Remote in sculptured light. br br And I saw the broadening beams of the early sun br On the pale Pacific melt, br And naked fishermen, idly rocked in a boat; br Their briny nets I smelt. br br I saw amid Asian deserts a bed of reeds, br And a heron slowly rose br To the cloud from wild reeds blown by a wind that came br From a land no man yet knows. br br And I watched a tall ship gliding out of the mist br By a snow--seamed iron cape. br The smoky wraiths clung round her, but on she stemmed, br Self--willed, a wing--bright shape. br br Then all fell dark. Yet still in a trance elate, br And strange to myself I lay. br Here was the black, soft stillness: but where was I? br Far away, far away.
