Henry Louis Vivian Derozio - Going Into Darkness

'It is that hour when dusky night br Comes gathering o're departing light, br When hue by hue and ray by ray, br Thine eye may watch it waste away, br Until thou canst no more behold br The faded tints of pallid gold br And soft descended the shades of night, br As did those hues so purely bright; br And in the blue sky, star by star, br Shines out, like happiness afar; br A wilderness of worlds! - To well br In one, with those we have loved well br Where bliss indeed! - The waters flow br Gurgling, in darkest hue below, br And 'gainst the shore the ripple breaks br As from its cave, the east wind wakes, br But lo! where Dian's crest on high appears, br Faint as the memory of departing years. br br NIGHT br br The moon is gone; and thus go those we love; br The night winds wail; and thus for them we mourn; br The stars look down; thus spirits from above br Hallow the mourners' tears upon the urn. br Some thoughts are all of joy, and some of love; br Mine end in tears - they're welcome - let them flow br ……………………………… We look around, br But vainly look for those who formed a part br Of us, as we of them, and whom we wore br Like gems in bezels, in the heart's deep core.
