Anna Laetitia Barbauld - Behold

Anna Laetitia Barbauld - Behold

Behold, where breathing love divine, br Our dying Master stands! br His weeping followers gathering round br Receive his last commands. br From that mild teacher's parting lips br What tender accents fell! br The gentle precept which he gave br Became its author well. br “Blest is the man whose softening heart br Feels all another's pain; br To whom the supplicating eye br Was never raised in vain. br br “Whose breast expands with generous warmth br A stranger's woes to feel; br And bleeds in pity o'er the wound br He wants the power to heal. br “He spreads his kind supporting arms br To every child of grief; br His secret bounty largely flows, br And brings unasked relief. br “To gentle offices of love br His feet are never slow; br He views through mercy's melting eye br A brother in a foe. br “Peace from the bosom of his God, br My peace to him I give; br And when he kneels before the throne, br His trembling soul shall live. br br “To him protection shall be shown, br And mercy from above br Descend on those who thus fulfill br The perfect law of love.
