Bliss William Carman - The Old Gray Wall

Bliss William Carman - The Old Gray Wall

Time out of mind I have stood br br Fronting the frost and the sun, br br That the dream of the world might endure, br br And the goodly will be done. br br Did the hand of the builder guess, br br As he laid me stone by stone, br br A heart in the granite lurked, br br Patient and fond as his own? br br Lovers have leaned on me br br Under the summer moon, br br And mowers laughed in my shade br br In the harvest heat at noon. br br br br Children roving the fields br br With early flowers in spring, br br Old men turning to look, br br When they heard a blue-bird sing, br br br br Have seen me a thousand times br br Standing here in the sun, br br Yet never a moment dreamed br br Whose likeness they gazed upon.
