John Pierpont - Hymn of the Emancipation

John Pierpont - Hymn of the Emancipation

Before thy throne we boast the name br Of Freemen:-God, thy frown is just. br Immortals, break your bonds of shame! br Arise, inebriates, from the dust! br br br Slavery and death the cup contains; br Dash to the earth the poisoned bowl! br Softer than silk are iron chains, br Compared with those that chafe the soul. br br br Hosannas, Lord, to thee we sing, br Whose power the giant fiend obeys. br What countless thousands tribute bring, br For happier homes and brighter days! br br br Thou wilt not break the bruised reed, br Nor leave the broken heart unbound: br The wife regains a husband freed! br The orphan clasps a father found! br br br Spare, Lord, the thoughtless, guide the blind; br Till man no more shall deem it just br To live, by forging chains to bind br His weaker brother in the dust.
