John Pierpont - Hymn For The First of August

John Pierpont - Hymn For The First of August

Where Britannia's emerald isles br Gem the Caribbean sea, br And an endless summer smiles, br Lo! the negro thrall is free! br Yet not on Columbia's plains, br Hath the sun of freedom risen: br Here, in darkness and in chains, br Toiling millions pine in prison. br br br Shout! ye islands disenthralled, br Point the finger, as in scorn, br At a country that is called br Freedom's home, where men are born br Heirs, for life, to chains and whips,- br Bondmen, who have never known br Wife, child, parent, that their lips br Ever dared to call their own. br br br Yet, a Christian land is this! br Yea, and ministers of Christ br Slavery's foot, in homage, kiss; br And their brother, who is priced br Higher than their Saviour, even, br Do they into bondage sell;- br Pleading thus the cause of Heaven, br Serving thus the cause of hell.
