John Godfrey Saxe - How Cyrus Laid the Cable

John Godfrey Saxe - How Cyrus Laid the Cable

COME, listen all unto my song; br It is no silly fable; br 'T is all about the mighty cord br They call the Atlantic Cable. br br Bold Cyrus Field he said, says he, br I have a pretty notion br That I can run a telegraph br Across the Atlantic Ocean. br br Then all the people laughed, and said, br They'd like to see him do it; br He might get half-seas-over, but br He never could go through it. br br To carry out his foolish plan br He never would be able; br He might as well go hang himself br With his Atlantic Cable. br br But Cyrus was a valiant man, br A fellow of decision; br And heeded not their mocking words, br Their laughter and derision. br br Twice did his bravest efforts fail, br And yet his mind was stable; br He wa'n't the man to break his heart br Because he broke his cable.
