Henry James Pye - The Fourth Olympic Ode Of Pindar

STROPHE. br Great Jove! supreme immortal King! br Borne on the unwearied thunder's wing; br Again thy hours that roll along br Responsive to the varied song, br Awake my Lyre, and send me forth br A witness of heroic worth. br The Virtuous in a Friend's success rejoice, br And join the applauding Herald's chearful voice.— br O son of Saturn! who on Ætna's brow, br The woody load of Typhon's giant breast, br Holdest thy high abode; the Graces now br Invite thee to assist the Strain, address'd br To greet the Victor in the Olympic strife; br Of every virtuous deed, the lustre, and the life. br br ANTISTROPHE. br On his proud Car triumphant placed, br His brows with Pisa's Olive graced, br Lo Psaumis comes! the Shores around br Fair Camarina's Praise resound; br For to his own illustrious name br The Patriot joins his Country's Fame. br O may the immortal Gods propitious hear br His future vows, and grant each pious prayer! br Well is he skill'd to train the generous Steed, br Fair Plenty crowns his hospitable gate, br With breast sincere he courts the placid meed br Of smiling Peace, best Guardian of the State. br No hues fallacious tinge my honest lay, br Experience to the world will every truth display. br br EPODE. br This from the Lemnian Dames' disgrace br Freed Clymenus' victorious son, br When, clad in brazen arms, the race br With active limbs the Hero won, br And, taking from Hypsipyle the Crown, br He thus the royal Maid address'd: br Behold the Man! nor great in speed alone! br My hand unvanquish'd, undismay'd my breast. br These Silver Tresses, lo! are spread br Untimely, on a youthful Head; br For oft capricious Nature's Rage br Gives to the vigorous Brow, the hoary Tint of Age.
