George Pope Morris - Washington's Monument.

George Pope Morris - Washington's Monument.

A monument to Washington? br A tablet graven with his name?-- br Green be the mound it stands upon, br And everlasting as his fame! br br His glory fills the land--the plain, br The moor, the mountain, and the mart! br More firm than column, urn, or fane, br His monument--the human heart. br br The Christian--patriot--hero--sage! br The chief from heaven in mercy sent; br His deeds are written on the age-- br His country is his monument. br br 'The sword of Gideon and the Lord' br Was mighty in his mighty hand-- br The God who guided he adored, br And with His blessing freed the land. br br The first in war--the first in peace-- br The first in hearts that freeman own; br Unparalleled till time shall cease-- br He lives immortal and alone. br br Yet let the rock-hewn tower arise, br High to the pathway of the sun, br And speak to the approving skies br Our gratitude to Washington.
