George Linnaeus Banks - What I Live For

I live for those who love me, br Whose hearts are kind and true, br For heaven that smiles above me, br And waits my spirit, too; br For all the ties that bind me, br For all the tasks assigned me. br And bright hopes left behind me, br And good that I can do. br br I live to learn their story br Who've suffered for my sake, br To emulate their glory, br And follow in their wake; br Bards, patriots, martyrs, sages, br The noble of all ages, br Whose deeds crown history's pages, br And Time's great volume make. br br I live to hold communion br With all that is divine, br To feel there is a union br 'Twixt Nature's heart and mine; br To profit by affliction, br Reap truths from fields of fiction, br And, wiser from conviction, br Fulfil each grand design. br br I live to hail that season, br By gifted minds foretold, br When men shall rule by reason, br And not alone by gold; br When man to man united, br And every wrong thing righted, br The whole world shall be lighted br As Eden was of old. br br I live for those who love me, br Whose hearts are kind and true, br For heaven that smiles above me, br And waits my spirit too; br For the cause that lacks assistance, br For the wrong that needs resistance, br For the future in the distance, br And the good that I can do.
