Charles Edward Montague - In Hospital

Charles Edward Montague - In Hospital

We from the sunless, airless trench, br The mud, the muddy bread, the stench, br Of No Man's Land, where English, French, br And Germans rest, br br Came on an English April day br Through sun-filled railway-cuttings, gay br With English primroses, away br Into the West, br br And found ourselves with Plymouth Sound br Beneath us, and Drake's bowling-ground br Above; and from the heights around br The bay there came br br The boom of English guns, the call br Of English bugles. Best of all, br In this kind Devon hospital, br The old, the same br br Strong gentleness of nursing eyes br And mothering hearts, and hands that bring br Health radiant as an English spring br To wounded, sick, and suffering.
