James Brunton Stephens - Hate

James Brunton Stephens - Hate

My enemy came nigh, br And I br Stared fiercely in his face. br My lips went writhing back in a grimace, br And stern I watched him with a narrow eye. br Then, as I turned away, my enemy, br That bitter heart and savage, said to me: br 'Some day, when this is past, br When all the arrows that we have are cast, br We may ask one another why we hate, br And fail to find a story to relate. br It may seem then to us a mystery br That we should hate each other.' br br Thus said he, br And did not turn away, br Waiting to hear what I might have to say, br But I fled quickly, fearing had I stayed br I might have kissed him as I would a maid.
