Lonnie Hicks - Cloaks Of 23

Lonnie Hicks - Cloaks Of 23

I want you br but I know you br suspect this already br taking bites of it like br a ripe delicious apple br with those perfect teeth br looking at me br through the bedroom eyes br of nonchalant youth br feasting on admiration br and attention br from us over thirties br who crave in you br our last grasp at the youth br which was once ours; br now consoling ourselves br with work, money or security, br thinking just maybe br you'd swap the latters br for the true love of the br young men who surround you br in their twenties. br br Youth never understands br that age br does not abandon its own youth br rather br our older faces relentlessly br cover its relentless br insurgencies smashing our illusions. br br So it is not br just you we crave br but our own fading youth br you represent br as we find ourselves meandering down the years br our minds fixed on how we were br at 17 or 23. br br The body defeats br ultimately our youthful sense of agelessness br but that is something that can never be explained br to young girls of 23. br br In fact if you approached most of us br we would blush and flee br because it is not you we crave br but our own young selves br at 17 and 23- br selves which abandoned us br for the cheap price of fleeting years br leaving us as oarless dingys br floating on an aging seas. br br So as we br console our sorrow br with money or power br which do not sate br we, too, gaze back longingly; br youthful pasts br represented by you br clad now in only our poor cloak br for what was once br our own youthful br youth. br br So pass now br sweet sprite br by these older eyes- br apple core br to the ground- br because those seeds within br shall be rightfully br sewn br by other younger br youth's hands.
