David Chalk - Human Rights’

In a civilised land br That accepts duty to all br Citizens have rights br Some great, some small br br This is how things should be br To those who value br Truth and fairness br And justice and decency br br But those who treasure money br And the power of wealth br Seek to remove such rights br Through deceit and stealth br br They claim that duty br Comes before such rights br But they accept no obligation br For causing another’s plight br br Obligation before rights br Is their loud refrain br But fulfilling their own duties br Is something they distain br br For rights are for the powerful br Whilst duty is for the poor br And decency and justice br The Country provides no more br br Human Rights matter br To ensure justice for all br For saints and for sinners br For all people great and small br br The alternative is ugly br With justice a forgotten myth br With power replacing fairness br And a society that is truly sickbr br David Chalkbr br
