David Chalk - Workers’ Rights’

David Chalk - Workers’ Rights’

In the not-so distant past br Workers had no rights br To achieve them they organised br To win them they had to fight br br From Tolpuddle and Unions br And the right to strike br Working folk won their rights br Against greedy financial might br br But what they won was a victory br In a battle not the war br As some seek to re-set the clock br To what there was before. br br What they won was fairness br And dignity for all br But these rights were limited br And then restrained and worn br br And slowly these rights were reduced br Gradually made weak and small br And now financial privilege claims br They should not exist at all. br br They say removing rights is necessary br It’s what our country needs br They say it’s to restore the economy br That such rights are economic weeds br br Thus does greedy financial might br Try to steal what has been won br With lies and excuses about our plight br And what must be done. br br Those who believe in justice br Those who support what’s fair br Must fight these lies with honesty br And forever remain aware.
