Valerie Lennox - Treading Water

Valerie Lennox - Treading Water

Inexorably, minutes tick by br And time seeps slowly past br Like the trickle through the crack in the dam br Hardly noticed until br The level has dropped leaving a high water mark that no rainfall can reach br br No storms can ever, no matter how wild br Fill the time, replenish the source br It is forever gone. br br Hands once straight and strong br Grasp for a steadying hold br And gnarled and crooked fingers reach out br To touch, veined and wrinkled, and with a sigh br Retreat to clasp in withered unity, each other. br br And rheumy eyes strain br To see the light as warm sunshine br Dapples on the leaves outside the window br Shadows flit and sometimes materialize in song br As a bird comes close and shakes its feathers br Now seen, then gone. br br Life, punctuated by br Meal times, institutionalized episodes br In a drama so small and insignificant br And once a week, when duty calls br And his world is filled with sound and bustling br And all too soon, is quiet, again. br br Treading water, a life lived in memories br Of love and loss and pain and joy br A symphony, now silent, of voices. br Echoes down dusty halls br And crumbling walls of a life once lived. br br Of purposeful meaning marching forward br Ever on, not taking the time br To stop and see the…feel the…pulse of life br To notice the changes until it ends br Here, in this small room, alone.
