Seamus Heaney - Twice Shy

Seamus Heaney - Twice Shy

Her scarf a la Bardot, br In suede flats for the walk, br She came with me one evening br For air and friendly talk. br We crossed the quiet river, br Took the embankment walk. br br Traffic holding its breath, br Sky a tense diaphragm: br Dusk hung like a backcloth br That shook where a swan swam, br Tremulous as a hawk br Hanging deadly, calm. br br A vacuum of need br Collapsed each hunting heart br But tremulously we held br As hawk and prey apart, br Preserved classic decorum, br Deployed our talk with art. br br Our Juvenilia br Had taught us both to wait, br Not to publish feeling br And regret it all too late - br Mushroom loves already br Had puffed and burst in hate. br br So, chary and excited, br As a thrush linked on a hawk, br We thrilled to the March twilight br With nervous childish talk: br Still waters running deep br Along the embankment walk.
