Geoffrey Hill - Picture of a Nativity

Sea-preserved, heaped with sea-spoils, br Ribs, keels, coral sores, br Detached faces, ephemeral oils, br Discharged on the world’s outer shores, br br A dumb child-king br Arrives at his right place; rests, br Undisturbed, among slack serpents; beasts br With claws flesh-buttered. In the gathering br br Of bestial and common hardship br Artistic men appear to worship br And fall down; to recognize br Familiar tokens; believe their own eyes. br br Above the marvel, each rigid head, br Angels, their unnatural wings displayed, br Freeze into an attitude br Recalling the dead.
