rajendran muthiah - Beggarliness

The cats march on to the backyard br Of my house and leave their kitten, br taking it for a safe haven. br br When I come upon a dog br lying beside the walls of the school, br with its pups rolling over it, br I buy biscuits from a shop br and feed them with grace. br br When the rats pluck up courage br to hold jamborees in the porch, br I don’t beat them or drive them out br fearing to be infected with rat-fever. br But I put coleslaw for them to eat. br br When little lamps jump into my office room, br and let down their balls of dung, br I smile, lift them up and give them br to the girls of lower classes. br br When I see beggars lame or blind, br I touch the coins in my pocket br but hesitate to give them; br as most of them tell tales of lies. br They get freebies from the Government br yet their list swells in trains and public places. br br Some who run private homes to orphans br send the inmates to beg in streets br But they beg from cinestars and the rich br with a printed receipt book in hand. br The old ones plead starvation br and go on cheating pliable public. br Some ladies and the differently -abled br roam to beg with letters in trains and buses. br Some criminals appeal for alms with appalling faces. br Terrorists too beg from the rich and cinestars br and demand donations without giving receipts. br Fake sages and seers receive funds from abroad br to frustrate the addicts from drugs br and the men and women garbless to meditate in halls.
