David Ignatow - Play Again

David Ignatow - Play Again

Late in 1962 New York newspapers reported the story of a nine-year- br old child being raped on a roof, and hurled twenty stories to the br ground. br br I draw near to the roof's edge br and seek someone to lift br and hurl me out into vacant air. br I want to turn over and over br rapidly in my plunge, my mouth br open to scream but air rushing br upwards jams my throat. br I am seeking the peace br I never once gave up on br and this is the final way to find it. The living br share me among them. They taste br me on the ground, they taste me br in the air descending. They taste br me screaming, nine years old. br I have playmates br and I leave behind my skull br in their dreams, hands to mouths. br It is because they have no help, br as if to hint to them the way, br if they would understand. br When we played it was to love each other br in games. Play again and love me br until I really die, when you are old br on a flight of stairs.
