Alice Duer Miller - Final Poem

Alice Duer Miller - Final Poem

The consciousness of my mortality br Which used to blind and limit all my life br Weighs on me not since I have been your wife. br Death is the price of our felicity; br And life eternal would not leave us free br To love each other thus, setting above br The grace of God, a common human love, br Untouched, unthreatened by any heaven to be. br For who, while waiting to be crowned a king br Can relish all the humble every day? br Who but must hasten when she sets a goal? br For me, I could not make our life a thing br So wise, so real, so tender and so gay br Had I this other care - to save my soul.
