Alice Walker - Our Martyr

Alice Walker - Our Martyr

When the people br have won a victory br whether small br or large br do you ever wonder br at that moment br where the martyrs br might be? br They who sacrificed br themselves br to bring to life br something unknown br though nonetheless more precious br than their blood. br I like to think of them br hovering over us br wherever we have gathered br to weep and to rejoice; br smiling and laughing, br actually slapping each other's palms br in glee. br Their blood has dried br and become rose petals. br What you feel brushing your cheek br is not only your tears br but these. br Martyrs never regret br what they have done br having done it. br Amazing too br they never frown. br It is all so mysterious br the way they remain br above us br beside us br within us; br how they beam br a human sunrise br and are so proud.
