Arthur Symons - White Magic

Arthur Symons - White Magic

Against the world I closed my heart, br And, half in pride and half in fear, br I said to Love and Lust: Depart; br None enters here. br br A gipsy witch has glided in, br She takes her seat beside my fire; br Her eyes are innocent of sin, br Mine of desire. br br She holds me with an unknown spell, br She folds me in her heart's embrace; br If this be love, I cannot tell: br I watch her face. br br Her sombre eyes are happier br Than any joy that e'er had voice; br Since I am happiness to her, br I too rejoice. br br And I have closed the door again, br Against the world I close my heart; br I hold her with my spell; in vain br Would she depart. br br I hold her with a surer spell, br Beyond her magic, and above: br If hers be love, I cannot tell, br But mine is love.
