Arthur Symons - La Mélinite: Moulin Rouge

Olivier Metra's Waltz of Roses br Sheds in a rhythmic shower br The very petals of the flower; br And all is roses, br The rouge of petals in a shower. br br Down the long hall the dance returning br Rounds the full circle, rounds br The perfect rose of lights and sounds, br The rose returning br Into the circle of its rounds. br br Alone, apart, one dancer watches br Her mirrored, morbid grace; br Before the mirror, face to face, br Alone she watches br Her morbid, vague, ambiguous grace. br br Before the mirror's dance of shadows br She dances in a dream, br And she and they together seem br A dance of shadows; br Alike the shadows of a dream. br br The orange-rosy lamps are trembling br Between the robes that turn; br In ruddy flowers of flame that burn br The lights are trembling: br The shadows and the dancers turn. br br And, enigmatically smiling, br In the mysterious night, br She dances for her own delight, br A shadow smiling br Back to a shadow in the night.
