Clive Staples Lewis - Hesperus

Clive Staples Lewis - Hesperus

Through the starry hollow br Of the summer night br I would follow, follow br Hesperus the bright, br To seek beyond the western wave br His garden of delight. br br Hesperus the fairest br Of all gods that are, br Peace and dreams thou bearest br In thy shadowy car, br And often in my evening walks br I’ve blessed thee from afar. br br Stars without number, br Dust the noon of night, br Thou the early slumber br And the still delight br Of the gentle twilit hours br Rulest in thy right. br br When the pale skies shiver, br Seeing night is done, br Past the ocean-river, br Lightly thou dost run, br To look for pleasant, sleepy lands, br That never fear the sun. br br Where, beyond the waters br Of the outer sea, br Thy triple crown of daughters br That guards the golden tree br Sing out across the lonely tide br A welcome home to thee. br br And while the old, old dragon br For joy lifts up his head, br They bring thee forth a flagon br Of nectar foaming red, br And underneath the drowsy trees br Of poppies strew thy bed.
