Claudia Emerson - Orchid Anatomy

This evening's study the anatomy of the orchid, br the greenhouse glows—jut of glass at the third story br br of the science building—a small, tended jungle br thriving in its humid room. Wearing identical br br lab aprons, they lean over the misting table br or peer into the daintier air-orchids br br in order to name and sketch the parts, br committing to memory the sepials, inner whorl br br of petals, the column where male and female br fuse, and the sticky, stigmatic surface br br of the pouting lip where birds, moths, br and bees would land if allowed this sterile br br world. Each wall even the vaulted roof br a canvas, all their breathing dissolves br br into the ordered atmosphere of this br one, sustained season—until, if seen br br from the outside, the glass's weeping would br render them recognizable but changed, br br their bodies, braids, aprons, the green leaves running br into a pleasing, impressionistic bleed.
