Clive Staples Lewis - The Autumn Morning

See! the pale autumn dawn br Is faint, upon the lawn br That lies in powdered white br Of hoar-frost dight br br And now from tree to tree br The ghostly mist we see br Hung like a silver pall br To hallow all. br br It wreathes the burdened air br So strangely everywhere br That I could almost fear br This silence drear br br Where no one song-bird sings br And dream that wizard things br Mighty for hate or love br Were close above. br br White as the fog and fair br Drifting through the middle air br In magic dances dread br Over my head. br br Yet these should know me too br Lover and bondman true, br One that has honoured well br The mystic spell br br Of earth’s most solemn hours br Wherein the ancient powers br Of dryad, elf, or faun br Or leprechaun br br Oft have their faces shown br To me that walked alone br Seashore or haunted fen br Or mountain glen br br Wherefore I will not fear br To walk the woodlands sere br Into this autumn day br Far, far away.
