Czeslaw Milosz - The Road

Czeslaw Milosz - The Road

here where you see a green valley br And a road half-covered with grass, br Through an oak wood beginning to bloom br Children are returning home from school. br br In a pencil case that opens sideways br Crayons rattle among crumbs of a roll br And a copper penny saved by every child br To greet the first spring cuckoo. br br Sister's beret and brother's cap br Bob in the bushy underbrush, br A screeching jay hops in the branches br And long clouds float over the trees. br br A red roof is already visible at the bend. br In front of the house father, leaning on a hoe, br Bows down, touches the unfolded leaves, br And from his flower bed inspects the whole region.
