Charles Sangster - Gertrude

Charles Sangster - Gertrude

Underneath the maple-tree br Gertrude worked her filigree, br All the summer long; br To sweet airs her voice was wed, br As she plied her golden thread; br Echo stealing through the grove br Filched away the words of love, br And the birds, from tree to tree, br Bore the witching melody br Through avenues of Song. br br Underneath the maple-trees br Zephyrs chant her melodies, br All the summer long; br Words and airs no longer wed, br Death has snapped the vocal thread br Echo sleeping in the grove br Dreams of liquid airs of love, br And the birds among the trees br Fill with sweetest symphonies br Whole avenues of Song.
