Erica Jong - The Raspberries in My Driveway

Nature will bear the closest inspection . She invites us to lay our eyes level with her smallest leaf, and take an insect view of its plain. br -Thoreau br br The raspberries br in my driveway br have always br been here br (for the whole eleven years br I have owned br but have not owned br this house), br yet br I have never br tasted them br before. br br Always on a plane. br Always in the arms br of man, not God, br always too busy, br too fretful, br too worried br to see br that all along br my driveway br are red, red raspberries br for me to taste. br br Shiny and red, br without hairs- br unlike the berries br from the market. br Little jewels- br I share them br with the birds! br br On one perches br a tiny green insect. br I blow her off. br She flies! br I burst the raspberry br upon my tongue. br br In my solitude br I commune br with raspberries, br with grasses, br with the world.
