Is God the one who eats the meat br off the bones of dead people? br -Molly Miranda Jong-Fast, age 3 12 br br God is the one, br Molly, br whether we call him br Him, br or Her, br treeform or spewing br volcano, br Vesuvius or vulva, br penis-rock, br or reindeer-on-cave-wall, br God is the one br who eats br our meat, br Molly, br & we yield br our meat br up willingly. br br Meat is our br element, br meat is our br lesson. br br When our bodies fill br with each other, br when our blood swells br in our organs br aching for another, br body of meat, br heart of meat, br soul of meat, br we are only doing br what God wants br us to— br meat joining meat br to become insubstantial air, br meat fusing br with meat br to make br a small wonder br like you. br The wonder of you br is that you push br our questions br along into br the future— br so that I know br again br the wonder of meat br through you, br the wonder of meat br turning to philosophy, br the wonder of meat br transubstantiated br into poetry, br the wonder of br sky-blue meat br in your roundest eyes, br the wonder of br dawn-colored meat br in your cheeks & palms, br the wonder of meat br becoming br air. br br You br are my theorem, br my proof, br my meaty metaphysics, br my little questioner, br my small Socrates br of the nursery-schoolyard. br br To think that br such wonder br can come from meat! br br Well then, br if God is hungry— br let Him eat, br let Her eat.
