Erica Jong - The Buddha in the Womb

Erica Jong - The Buddha in the Womb

Bobbing in the waters of the womb, br little godhead, ten toes, ten fingers br & infinite hope, br sails upside down through the world. br br My bones, I know, are only a cage br for death. br Meditating, I can see my skull, br a death's head, br lit from within br by candles br which are possibly the suns br of other galaxies. br br I know that death br is a movement toward light, br a happy dream br from which you are loath to awaken, br a lover left br in a country br to which you have no visa, br & I know that the horses of the spirit br are galloping, galloping, galloping br out of time br & into the moment called NOW. br br Why then do I care br for this upside-down Buddha br bobbling through the world, br his toes, his fingers br alive with blood br that will only sing & die. br br There is a light in my skull br & a light in his. br We meditate on our bones only br to let them blow away br with fewer regrets. br br Flesh is merely a lesson. br We learn it br & pass on.
