Erica Jong - Dearest Man-in-the-Moon

Dearest man-in-the-moon, br ever since our lunch of cheese br & moonjuice br on the far side of the sun, br I have walked the craters of New York, br a trail of slime br ribboning between my legs, br a phosphorescent banner br which is tied to you, br a beam of moonlight br focused on your navel, br a silver chain br from which my body dangles, br & my whole torso chiming br like sleigh bells in a Russian novel. br br Dearest man-on-the-moon, br I used to fear moonlight br thinking her my mother. br I used to dread nights br when the moon was full. br I used to scream br 'Pull down the shade!' br because the moonface leered at me, br because I felt her mocking, br because my fear lived in me br like rats in a wheel of cheese. br br You have eaten out my fear. br You have licked br the creamy inside of the moon. br You have kissed br the final crescent of my heart br & made it full.
