Eugene Field - Ganderfeather's Gift

Eugene Field - Ganderfeather's Gift

I was just a little thing br When a fairy came and kissed me; br Floating in upon the light br Of a haunted summer night, br Lo, the fairies came to sing br Pretty slumber songs and bring br Certain boons that else had missed me. br From a dream I turned to see br What those strangers brought for me, br When that fairy up and kissed me-- br Here, upon this cheek, he kissed me! br br Simmerdew was there, but she br Did not like me altogether; br Daisybright and Turtledove, br Pilfercurds and Honeylove, br Thistleblow and Amberglee br On that gleaming, ghostly sea br Floated from the misty heather, br And around my trundle-bed br Frisked, and looked, and whispering said-- br Solemnlike and all together: br 'You shall kiss him, Ganderfeather!' br br Ganderfeather kissed me then-- br Ganderfeather, quaint and merry! br No attenuate sprite was he, br --But as buxom as could be;-- br Kissed me twice, and once again, br And the others shouted when br On my cheek uprose a berry br Somewhat like a mole, mayhap, br But the kiss-mark of that chap br Ganderfeather, passing merry-- br Humorsome, but kindly, very! br br I was just a tiny thing br When the prankish Ganderfeather br Brought this curious gift to me br With his fairy kisses three; br Yet with honest pride I sing br That same gift he chose to bring br Out of yonder haunted heather. br Other charms and friendships fly-- br Constant friends this mole and I, br Who have been so long together.
