Frederick William (FW) Harvey - Ballade

Bodies of comrade soldiers gleaming white br Within the mill-pool where you float and dive br br And lounge around part-clothed or naked quite; br Beautiful shining forms of men alive, br O living lutes stringed with the senses five br br For Love's sweet fingers; seeing Fate afar, br My very soul with Death for you must strive; br br Because of you I loathe the name of War. br br But O you piteous corpses yellow-black, br br Rotting unburied in the sunbeam's light, br With teeth laid bare by yellow Hps curled back br br Most hideously; whose tortured souls took br flight br br Leaving your limbs, all mangled by the fight, br In attitudes of horror fouler far br br Than dreams which haunt a devil's brain at br night; br Because of you I loathe the name of War. br br Mothers and maids who loved you, and the wives br Bereft of your sweet presences; yea, all br br Who knew you beautiful; and those small lives br Made of that knowledge; O, and you who call br br br For life (but vainly now) from that dark hall br Where wait the Unborn, and the loves which are br br In future generations to befall; br Because of you I loathe the name of War, br br l'envoi br br Prince Jesu, hanging stark upon a tree br br Crucified as the malefactors are br That man and man henceforth should brothers be; br br Because of you I loathe the name of War.
