Frederick George Scott - Words

WORDS are but passing symbols of the deep br Crying unto deep in individual souls. br And men are words on the great voice that rolls br Through Nature, since that morn when from their sleep br The elements heard, and they who vigil keep br 5 br On Heaven's battlements, to distant poles br Re-echoed, "Let light be!"—such voice as tolls br The birth and death of all who laugh or weep. br Not uniform, but in a wondrous plan, br Each diverse from his fellows, symbol each br 10 br Of varying thought in the eternal mind. br Now at the feet of every age of man br We sit and learn. Haply, in perfect speech br Its voice will be God's message to our kind.
