Frederick George Scott - Truth

Frederick George Scott - Truth

I SAW Truth on the mountains, golden-shod br With day-dawn, girt about with skies br Of azure mist, half veiling from man's eyes br Her silent face and gaze upturned to God. br Beneath were clouded steeps of shale and sod, br 5 br Tracked deviously by feet that human-wise br Toiled upward, but toiled vainly towards the prize; br Some following, shunning some where others trod. br Yet in the darkness oft there came, "I see," br From eager hearts I met. "Behold!" men cried, br 10 br Yet variously; "such are Truth's features high." br Self's shadow, form the soul's intensity br Cast on the mist, not such the face I spied, br Calm, sovereign, silent, upturned 'midst the sky.
